USD 436 BOE votes unanimously to grant contract extensions to principals

All three USD 436 principals were granted an additional year to their existing contracts based upon a unanimous vote of the USD 436 Board of Education on Monday.

The board members voted to give an additional one-year contract to Bill Ellis, high school principal, Ron Oyler, junior high principal and Caney Valley Charter School principal, and Tony Blackwell, elementary principal. Their current contracts, which were set to expire on June 30, 2014, will now expire on June 30, 2015. Board members casting support for the contract extensions were Mark Artherton, Jason Crowe, David Deal, John Harmon, Colby Matthews and Darlene Sanders.

The board’s decision came after members met for a total of one hour and 10 minutes in executive session, which is closed to the public and press, to discuss personnel matters.

Following the vote, the board held three additional executive sessions, concerning personnel matters, totaling 55 minutes. No further votes were taken after those closed-door discussions.

Monday’s vote was a reconsideration of the board’s Feb. 11 decision to grant one-year contract extensions. The vote at the Feb. 11 meeting was 3-2, one vote shy of the required four votes needed for passage of the motion (state law requires a minimum of four votes for any motion to pass). At that Feb. 11 meeting, board members Darlene Sanders and Mark Artherton voted against extending the contracts for another year while board members David Deal, Colby Matthews and John Harmon voted in favor of the contract extensions. Board member Jason Crowe was absent from the Feb. 11 meeting.

Last week’s Montgomery County Chronicle erroneously reported that the vote at the Feb. 11 meeting was 2-3 when, in fact, the vote was 3-2. That same story erroneously reported that board member David Deal voted against the contract extension. Deal voted in favor of it.
