Clarification needed regarding USD 436 principals’ contracts

Information contained in a story on page A1 of this week’s Montgomery County Chronicle regarding the contract extension for USD 436 principals needs clarification.

The story reported that the vote to extend the contracts for USD 436 principals was denied by a 2-3 vote.  That is an error.  The vote was 3-2 to accept the contract extensions.

However, school boards require four votes for any motion to pass.  Therefore, this particular motion to extend the contracts failed.

The three votes in favor of the contract extensions were cast by board members David Deal, Colby Matthews and John Harmon.  Voting against the issue were board members Darlene Sanders and Mark Artherton. Board member Jason Crowe was absent from the meeting.

As a result of the failed motion, the board will meet for a special meeting at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18 at the USD 436 Board of Education office, 700 E. Bullpup Blvd., for reconsideration of the contract extensions.

In another story about this week’s USD 436 Board of Education meeting, the school board voted to table action on construction of a food service story building at Caney Valley Jr.-Sr. High School.  The story in the Chronicle indicated the board voted to approve the construction.

The Chronicle apologizes for the errors.
