Spring elections to decide city, school, juco seats

The November general election is in the history books, but another election cycle is on the horizon.

 

City, school and community college elections will be held in the spring 2013 months with noon Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, as the deadline to file as a candidate for city council/commissions, school boards or community college trustees.

 

A primary election, if needed, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26; the general election will be held on Tuesday, April 2.

 

Listed below are details about the positions that will be decided by Montgomery County voters in the spring 2013 election cycle.

• Cherryvale City Council: Two council positions will be decided in the spring elections. Those positions are now held by ward 1 councilor Chad Wickham and ward 2 councilor Lew Forman.

 

City councilors serve four-year terms, which begin at the first council meeting following the April 2 general election.

 

The positions now held by ward 1 councilor Kevin Crain and ward 2 councilor Randy Wagoner, as well as Mayor John Wright, will be decided in the spring 2015 election cycle.

 

• USD 447 Board of Education: There are three positions that will be open for election. Those seats are now held by board members Bruce Thornton, Gina Booe and Jasmin Forman.

 

School board members are voted at-large in the Cherryvale-Thayer school district. A school board member’s four-year term begins in July 2013.

 

The positions held by Cody Smith, Michelle Loganbill, Randy Studebaker and Joe Marchant will be decided in the spring 2015 election cycle.

 

Any interested candidate for school board can obtain a free packet, “So You Want To Be A Board Member” from the USD 447 Board of Education Office, 618 E. Fourth, to learn more about the duties and qualifications of school board members.

 

• Caney City Council: The positions of Mayor Dale McBride and councilors Dan Johnston (ward 1), Joe Taylor (ward 2), Casey Eytcheson (ward 3) and Roger Hawthorne (ward 4) will be decided in the spring elections. Councilors and the city mayor serve two-year terms.

 

The positions now held by councilors Nathan Byrd (ward 1), Josh Eaton (ward 2), Dan Vernon (ward 3) and April Coots (ward 4) will be decided in the spring 2014 election cycle.

 

• USD 436 Board of Education:  There will be four positions decided  in the spring elections for the Caney Valley school board. Two of the four positions will be for two-year terms. They are the positions now held by Colby Matthews, who serves as an at-large position, and the position that was held by Kevin McIntosh before his resignation last month. That position, which is District A, Position 4, will be only for two years.

 

Whomever wins those two two-year terms will serve until July 2015, after which the positions revert to the normal four-year terms.

 

Current board members whose four-year terms will be decided in the spring election include Darlene Sanders, District B, Position 3; Jason Crowe, District A, Position 1; and Mark Artherton, District A, Position 2.

 

Board members who serve in District A reside within the Caney city limits; board members who reside in District B reside outside the city limits but within the Caney Valley school district.

 

• Independence City Commission: Two members of the three-member Independence City Commission will have  their terms expire in the spring 2012 elections.

 

The positions now held by commissioner Rick Mott and Tim White will be decided in the spring elections.

 

The post now held by commissioner Derrill Unruh will be decided in the spring 2015 elections.

 

City commissioners serve four-year terms.

 

USD 446 Board of Education: In the Independence school district, three school board positions will be decided in the spring election cycle. Those positions are now held by board members Jim Kelly, Jeff Chubb and Dan Bryant.

 

The positions now held by Kathy Newkirk, Carole Farthing, Charles Barker, Sr., and Marty Reichenberger will be decided in the spring 2015 election cycle.

 

School board members are voted at-large in the Independence school district. A school board member’s four-year term begins in July 2013.

 

Coffeyville City Commission: Three of the five Coffeyville City Commission positions will be decided in the spring elections. Those positions are now held by commissioners Pam Jones, Virgil Horn, Jr., and Don Edwards.

 

The commission terms held by David George and Jim Falkner will be decided in the spring 2015 election cycle.

 

USD 445 Board of Education: In the Coffeyville school district, three school board positions will be decided in the election.

 

Those positions are Dr. Paul Price (position 2), who was appointed to the board to fill the position held by Mark Frank, who was elected in 2011; Helen Ellerman (position 4), and Dr. Jerry Hamm (position 6).

 

The positions now held by Larry McGinnis, Denise Gates, Trudie Kritz and Robert Robson will be decided in the 2015 election cycle.

 

Coffeyville Community College Trustees: There will be three positions to be decided in the spring elections. Those trustee positions are now held by Blake Allen, David Baldwin and Becky Medley.

 

Trustees serve four-year terms, which begin in July.

 

The trustee seats held by Lue Barndollar, Sherri Melander and Keith Osborn will be chosen in the spring 2015 election.

 

Independence Community College Trustees: Three positions on the ICC board of trustees will be decided in the spring elections. Those positions are now held by Bill Kelly, Lisa Drumeller and Kim Kays.

The positions held by trustees Phillip Fienen, Hoite Caston and Jay Jones will be decided in the spring 2015 election cycle.

 

Trustees serve four-year terms, which begin in July following the April general election.
