COFFEYVILLE — A Cherryvale man who was sought for allegedly committing a variety of crimes, including stabbing a person on Nov. 4, was apprehended early Tuesday morning following a foot race with local police.
Police chief Anthony Celeste said Lawrence Antonio Hayes, age 35, was arrested in Coffeyville early Tuesday after a vehicle chase with Coffeyville police that began on U.S. 166 highway. Hayes eventually abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot with local police in pursuit. He was eventually arrested in the 600 block of West First in Coffeyville.
Celesete said Hayes had been sought by law enforcement for allegedly stabbing Stanley Kendrex, age 32, of Coffeyville on Nov. 4. Kendrex received a non-life threatening injury during that incident.
The pursuit began shortly after Mr. Hayes was seen exiting the Coffeyville Walmart Supercenter by an off-duty police officer who recognized him and alerted on-duty officers, Celeste said.
Hayes was arrested for aggravated battery, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, interference with a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, and driving while license suspended. He had also been sought and was arrested on four warrants for failing to appear in court.
