Five in a row for Caney Valley debate program

Winning first-place trophies is becoming old hat for the Caney Valley High School debaters, who brought home more gold from last weekend’s meet in Pittsburg.

Caney Valley made the tournament a royal flush of sorts with not only a first-place sweepstakes victory but also claiming first place teams in the open and novice divisions.

By winning the first-place sweepstakes trophy, Caney Valley has now brought home five consecutive team titles.

In the open division, the team of Alex Vore and Lexi Brey won first place with an 8-0 record while the team of Austin Smith and Katie Todd settled for third place overall.

In the novice, or first year, division, the team of Layne McCullough and Griffin Kennedy earned gold medals. The team of Marissa James and Sabrina Hall ended the tournament with a 3-2 record while the teams of Gabe Casady/Jacen Clapp and Mikayla Ingram/Kylee McCoy each had 2-3 records.

Caney Valley returns to the debate circuit — in a quest to claim an unprecedented sixth straight tournament title — on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Fort Scott.
