Coffeyville man dies of injuries in Labette County wreck

OSWEGO — A Coffeyville man died  Friday, June 8 from injuries he received when his motorcycle collided with an oncoming car along Highway 59 northwest of Oswego.

The Kansas High Patrol and Labette County Sheriff’s office reported that a vehicle driven by Trenton W. Walker, 19, of Oswego was traveling east on Highway 59 when it went left of center and struck a motorcycle driven by James D. Smith of Coffeyville. Smith was treated at the scene then transported to Freeman Medical Center in Joplin by helicopter where he died.

 

Another motorcycle, driven by David A. Hawkins of Cherryvale, was traveling alongside the Smith motorcycle, and its driver crashed in an effort to avoid the first collision.

 

Both Walker and Hawkins were treated for minor injuries.
