Area wrestlers qualify for state mat tournaments

Results from regional high school wrestling tournaments on Saturday include . . .

• Caney Valley will send seven wrestlers to the class 3A-1A state tournament in Hays next weekend. Qualifying for the state meet (by winning one of four top spots in their weight brackets at a regional meet in Eureka) are Colton Stalford, 106 pounds; Guy Kinder, 126 pounds; John Rodriguez, fourth place; Tyler Wood, 145 pounds; Sam Watt, 152 pounds; Hunter Stalford, 160 pounds; and Derek Bayless, 170 pounds.


• After being unable to qualify wrestlers to the state meet in 2011, Cherryvale High School will send a trio of grapplers to the class 3A-1A state meet. State qualifiers will be D.J. Cook, 113 pounds; Kaden Housel, 160 pounds; and Curtis Hodges, 182 pounds.


• Field Kindley High School will take two wrestlers to the class 4A state meet in Salina, Kan., next weekend. At a class 4A regional meet in Fort Scott, Blayne Kimmel, 145 pounds, won third place, and Derek Frost, 152 pounds, was runner-up in his weight bracket.


• Three wrestlers from Independence High School are bound for the class 4A state tournament. Finishing in the top four weight places in their brackets at the class 4A regional meet were Carl Jesse, 106 pounds; Arthur Jesse, 113 pounds; and Cole Keller, 152 pounds.
